New Wightlink ferries arrive!

After weeks of delay two of three new, multi-million pound Wightlink ferries, Wight Light and Wight Sky, came into service on Wednesday 25th February 2009.

They will service the Lymington-Yarmouth route to and from the Isle of Wight.

Passengers on the first crossings spoke very highly of the boats remarking that the older ferries on that route were looking 'very tired indeed!'

There has been much debate over the introduction of the new boats because they are larger than those they replace and locals fear they may adversely effect the protected salt marshes of the Lymington River. Consultants from Natural England and Lymington Harbour Commissioners have also voiced objections. However, a fragile compromise seems to have been reached whereby the new boats will sail at a slower speed whilst in the estuary.

We personally welcome the new craft - although, sadly, Wightlink seem to have discontinued the 'real china cups' referred to earlier!
