FOR SALE: ECHIUM PININANA PLANTS

Living on The Undercliff, immediately above Ventnor Botanic Garden, we are blessed with the same mild climate - and many of the same plants, some of which (Echium pininana, for example) grow like weeds!

Rather than throw young plants away, we are offering them for sale to anyone IN THE UK who feels they have the right conditions to grow them (i.e. mild climate and south-facing, sunny aspect).

As sold, the plants are less than one year old. On receipt, they should be planted out. In their first year they will grow to approximately 2 feet in height, but will not flower. In the second year they will grow up to 12 feet high before bursting into bloom. Masses of tiny blue flowers will appear all up the 'spire'.

The flowers last all summer (May to October) after which the parent plant dies. However, if you harvest the seeds, you can grow more the following year - or you can look out for self-sown seedlings. (Take care when handling Echium pininana plants - the stems are covered in transparent, needle-like barbs.)

We charge £7.50 per pack of three young plants, plus £2.50 postage. (We've seen them for sale at £45 each in garden centres, so this is a bargain not to be missed!)

We promise to send you healthy young plants by first class post, but for obvious reasons we cannot guarantee that they will survive. You must ensure that you have the appropriate conditions before purchasing.

Friends and relatives have successfully grown Echium pininana plants in Hampshire and in West Sussex - and I know they grow well in Devon and Cornwall. I would not recommend them for anywhere further north than London, but you may be lucky!

The Echium pininana plants currently on offer vary in size, the majority being under 12 inches high (as shown).
