Mottistone Manor Garden
Mottistone Manor (together with the surrounding estate of some 650 acres) was bequeathed to the National Trust in 1965 by the 2nd Lord Mottistone. Since then countless visitors of all ages have enjoyed exploring the beautifully landscaped grounds adorning this historic dwelling place.
Mottistone is named after the Long Stone (one of two standing stones on the downs above the manor house.) The Long Stone used to be known as the 'Meeting Stone' or 'Moot Stone', hence Mottistone.

Most of the present house dates from the 15th century. It is the result of extensive excavation and rebuilding work undertaken in 1450 by the then owner, Robert Cheke. Apparently much of this magnificent Tudor house had been buried under tons of sand following a catastrophic landslide. (Note the ground rising close behind the house.) The West Wing (seen here on the left hand side) was completed more than 100 years later in 1567 by Thomas Cheke, Robert's descendent.
The house itself is truly stunning, but unfortunately you will have to admire it from the outside only because it is privately tenanted and open to the public just one day each year (see below).
Visitors today are happy to come just to explore the beautiful garden, appreciating all the effort that has gone into creating and maintaining it. Personally, I just love to imagine all the people who have lived and toiled on this estate over the centuries. After all, it dates right back to before the Norman Conquest - and it's mentioned in The Domesday Book.

2010 Opening Hours
The garden will be open to the public from 14th March 2010 to 28th October 2010 between the hours of 11:00 am and 5:00pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays (last admission 4:30pm). Closes at dusk if earlier.
The Manor House will be open for one day only on Bank Holiday Monday, 31st May 2010, from 2pm - 5:00pm and additional charges apply. There will be guided tours for National Trust members on that day from 10:00am to 12:00 noon, by timed ticket available on the day.
Mottistone Manor Garden will delight horticultural enthusiasts of all ages, but please note that the paths are mostly sloping, and some are quite steep. Several walks are suggested - some especially suitable for youngsters who will enjoy hunting for little flower-pot men amongst the flower beds! Later, perhaps, after tea in 'The Shack', a walk onto the downs above the house will complete your visit.
