The Military Road (A3055) scenic route along the south coast of the Isle of Wight may be lost for ever if local councillors are unable to effect urgent repairs in time. Due to erosion and landslip (as previously reported on the site) the edge of the cliff is now just a few metres from the cliff edge. Traffic lights have already been installed and traffic reduced to single file along the affected stretch of road.
According to the Isle of Wight County Press, the IW Council is being told that the road is 'on its last legs' and it will be recommended that they turn it into two giant cul-de-sacs with parking facilities at each end.
Personally I cannot believe what i'm reading! The stretch of road is adjacent to open farmland. Why on earth can't they negotiate with the landowner and simply divert the road a few hundred yards inland? Everyone knows that the south coast is prone to erosion, but an interim measure of this type would last for another fifty years.
The Military Road is an important tourist attraction. People come from all over the world to drive its length and to marvel at the glorious views it offers. We cannot afford to lose it! Perhaps, with sufficient public support, we can persuade those in high places to act before it's too late. What do you think?
