Let's visit the
Isle of Wight Steam Railway!

The Isle of Wight Steam Railway is one of the island's best loved attractions, not only for little boys and big boys, but for everyone. We thoroughly enjoyed it!

Steam locomotives at Havenstreet Station

The best approach is to locate the principal station at Havenstreet, near Ryde, where you can park (O.S. map reference: SZ558898). From there you will have access to the platforms, the engines and all other attractions.

On arrival, you can buy platform tickets (if you just want to explore the premises) or, depending on the season, you can purchase tickets for a fantastic 10 mile round trip on the Isle of Wight steam railway.

Vintage steam locomotive and carriages

The vintage locomotives are beautifully maintained, and to see them pulling the lovely, old, Victorian or Georgian carriages is very moving - it really does transport you back in time to the glorious days of steam. I particularly love the old fashioned signals - and the clouds and clouds of steam!

On the far side of Havenstreet Station, across the level crossing, you will find a licensed cafe; on the other side, the main station building houses a lovely gift shop and museum.

The shop has lots and lots of really unusual trinkets and gift ideas - good quality stuff at very reasonable prices. It's the sort of place where you're happy to buy a few bit and bobs to take home as reminders of your visit.

The museum, on the other hand, is a static display covering everyday life in Britain from Victorian days to the end of the second world war. Much of it reminded me of my childhood (which made me feel very old indeed!), but it is beautifully done and well worth a visit.

Opening Times
The Isle of Wight Steam Railway operates every day during the peak holiday period (end of May to mid September) and on selected days only during March and October. If in doubt, I strongly suggest you call to avoid disappointment! Tel: 01983 884343. I do hope you enjoy your visit!
