Great Isle of Wight pubs
in West Wight

On this page we recommend some excellent Isle of Wight pubs in the west of the island.

THE NEW INN at Shalfleet
The New Inn is situated on the main road (A3054) between Yarmouth and Newport (Map reference: SZ414894). It's an excellent watering hole for those exploring nearby Newtown Creek.

We have visited this inn several times and can vouch for the excellent standard and variety of food. It's incredibly popular, so I would advise booking a table!

I would not recommend this inn for children (although it does have a small, raised area of decking outside). We liked it very much and considered food prices very fair.

Opening hours are from midday to 3:00pm and 6:00 pm to 11:00pm each day, with food being served between midday and 2:30pm then again between 6:00pm and 9:30pm.

THE SUN INN at Hulverstone
According to friends of ours who camped nearby in the 1970s, The Sun Inn has changed significantly over the years. But so have most places, I guess.

The original part of the building is thatched with flagstone floors and it retains a large inglenook fireplace in which a log fire is lit on chilly days. Marvelous! A spacious dining room has been added at the rear with large windows looking out across open countryside to Brook Bay where, on windy days, you can sometimes see wind-surfers riding the wild waves!

Food is served every day from midday through 'til 9:00 pm and, in our opinion, prices are reasonable. Lots of home-made dishes with a good variety of vegetables - and very generous portions. (We were given enough new potatoes for six!) The pub accepts telephone bookings and families are welcomed.

Where is it? Hulverstone is on the B3399 between Chessell Pottery and Brighstone. (If you've got the OS 1:25000 map of the island, the reference is: SZ397842).

THE THREE BISHOPS at Brighstone
This establishment has recently changed hands and a vast sum of money has been spent on refurbishment. The large car park at the rear will accommodate many vehicles, and the open-plan interior is ideal for large parties and families. There are also terraces where you can sit outside plus a lawned area with plenty of tables.

Opening hours are from 11:00am to 3:00pm and 6pm to 11:00pm from Monday to Saturday and from midday to 4:30pm and 6:00pm to 10:30pm on Sundays.

We liked the general atmosphere here and the staff were warm and friendly. The menu looked good and again, very reasonably priced. We only had home-made soup (which was delicious), but others were tucking into full meals with gusto and there were some very favorable comments about food in the visitors' book.
Where is it?
Brighstone is on the B3399 between Hulverstone and Shorwell and the pub is in the heart of the village near the church. (Map reference: SZ427827)

THE CROWN INN at Shorwell
The Crown Inn is one of the most popular on the island, but it's not very big, so it can get pretty crowded!

The interior is one of an old, country pub - lots of beams, flagstone floors and rustic furniture. Outside lies a very pleasant garden planned with families in mind. Little children will love the Wendy house and swings and the crystal clear stream that runs the full length of the garden. (Our children used to love to spot the large trout here.)

Opening hours are usually from 10:30 am to 3:00 pm and 6:00pm to 10:30pm with food served between midday and 2:30pm and again between 6:00pm and 9:00pm. In the summer months, however, opening hours are extended. If in doubt, I suggest you call.
Where is it? Shorwell is situated at the junction of the B3399 and the B3323 east of Brighstone. (Map reference: SZ456829) The pub is on the left hand side if you approach from Brighstone.

THE ALBION HOTEL at Freshwater Bay
The bar at The Albion Hotel is open to non-residents during opening hours and is undoubtedly a very pleasant place in which to while away the hours.

The hotel is situated right by the beach and most windows provide spectacular views across the bay.

We have not eaten here, but the facilities were of the highest quality and spotless, so one assumes the food would be good too!

THE BUGLE COACHING INN in Yarmouth
Situated in Yarmouth Square in the heart of this picturesque little town, The Bugle Coaching Inn is well worth a visit.

The Bugle Coaching Inn, The Square, Yarmouth (01983 760272)

The building itself dates from the 17th century - so you can expect lots of beams, nooks and crannies, and floors on different levels. There is also a conservatory at the rear of the inn where one can sit in the sunshine (weather permitting!) to enjoy an excellent meal.

Food is served here all day, every day and, as you may expect, fresh fish, lobster and crab are a speciality of the house!

We have visited The Bugle on several occasions and have always enjoyed a warm welcome, excellent service and good food.
